American Dream Survivors takes its name from the dreamcatcher, a significant object in Native American and First Nations cultures. Originating in Anishinaabe culture, the dreamcatcher is a handmade willow hoop with a woven net or web, often decorated with sacred feathers or beads. Traditionally hung over cradles or beds as protection, the dreamcatcher was known by various names across different nations, including "the spider web charm" and "dream snare," designed to replicate a spider's web for protective purposes. The dreamcatcher gained broader recognition during the Pan-Indian Movement of the 1960s and 1970s, and subsequently became widely popular as a marketed Native craft item throughout the 1980s. The band's name reflects this cultural symbol and its journey through history.
