About
Swedish melodic death metal band Amon Amarth formed in Tumba in 1992, taking their name from Sindarin for Mount Doom in J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth. Their lyrics draw heavily from Viking mythology and history, earning them the "Viking metal" label, though they identify as melodic death metal. Led by vocalist Johan Hegg alongside guitarists Olavi Mikkonen and Johan Söderberg, bassist Ted Lundström, and drummer Jocke Wallgren, the band achieved breakthrough success with 2008's Twilight of the Thunder God, which reached number 10 on Swedish charts and number 50 on the US Billboard 200.
