About
Anthrax is an infection caused by the bacterium Bacillus anthracis or Bacillus cereus biovar anthracis. Infection occurs through skin contact, inhalation, or intestinal absorption, with symptoms appearing between one day and two months after exposure. The skin form presents as a small blister with surrounding swelling that often becomes a painless ulcer with a black center. The inhalation form causes fever, chest pain, and shortness of breath. The intestinal form presents with diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Anthrax spreads through contact with bacterial spores found in animal products and does not typically spread between people directly.
