Formed in Contra Costa County, California in 1987, Autopsy is an American death metal band founded by Chris Reifert and Eric Cutler following Reifert's departure from Death. The band's origins trace back to the release of Death's demo Mutilation and their debut album Scream Bloody Gore in 1987. Based in Concord, California, Autopsy initially disbanded in 1995 before reuniting in 2008. Along with Death, Possessed, Obituary, Deicide, and Morbid Angel, Autopsy is regarded as among the founders of modern death metal. Their first two albums, Severed Survival released in 1989 and Mental Funeral released in 1991, are considered genre-defining landmarks that helped birth death metal and the associated death-doom genre. The band has released nine studio albums throughout their career.
