About
Avatar is a Sanskrit concept meaning "descent" that signifies the material appearance or incarnation of a powerful deity or spirit on Earth. The term appears in post-Vedic literature, particularly in Puranic texts after the 6th century CE. It is most commonly associated with the Hindu god Vishnu, though the concept applies to other deities as well. Hindu scriptures list numerous avatars, including the ten Dashavatara and twenty-two avatars in various texts. Similar incarnation concepts exist in Buddhism, Christianity, and other religions.
