Avernus is an ancient name for a volcanic crater situated near Cumae in Italy, located in the Campania region west of Naples. The crater forms part of the Phlegraean Fields, a volcanic area of geological significance. Measuring approximately 3.2 kilometres in circumference, Avernus is a notable geological formation. Within the crater lies Lake Avernus, also known as Lago d'Averno, which occupies the depression created by the volcanic activity that shaped this distinctive landscape.
