A marriage of convenience is a marriage contracted for reasons other than love and commitment. Instead, such marriages are entered into for personal gain or strategic purposes, such as political alliances. In some cases, those married do not intend to live together as a couple, and marriages entered into solely for one person to gain the right to reside in a country are considered sham marriages. In many cultures, parents traditionally decide their adult children's marriages, a practice known as an arranged marriage. Historical examples include ancient Roman Egypt between 30 BCE and 395 CE, where brother-sister marriages were common, comprising an estimated 15 to 21 percent of unions, often to keep property within the family. Marriages of convenience that are sham and arranged marriages that are forced are against the law in many jurisdictions.
