Ballista

A ballista was an ancient projectile weapon used to launch bolts or stones at distant targets. The name derives from Latin, Greek, and the word ballō, meaning "throw." This weapon was developed from earlier Greek designs and employed a sophisticated mechanical system using two levers with torsion springs rather than a traditional tension prod found in modern crossbows. The torsion springs consisted of several loops of twisted skeins, which provided the power necessary to propel projectiles. Early versions of the ballista were designed to fire heavy darts or spherical stone projectiles of various sizes, making them particularly effective for siege warfare. As the technology evolved, the weapon became refined into smaller, more precise versions, including a variant known as the scorpio. The ballista may have also influenced the development of another weapon called the polybolos.
