About
In Christian tradition, Belphegor is a demon associated with the seven deadly sins, particularly sloth and laziness. Derived from Baal-Peor, an ancient deity worshipped by Israelites, Belphegor is described in religious texts as one who tempts through wealth and invention. According to legend, he holds power over discovery and bestows riches, while simultaneously sowing dispute among people. Kabbalistic writings identify him as "the one who quarrels." De Plancy's Dictionnaire Infernal portrays him as Hell's ambassador to France, with Mary Magdalene as his adversary.
