A biohazard is a biological substance that poses a threat to the health of living organisms, primarily humans. This includes microorganisms, viruses, toxins, and other substances harmful to living beings. The term and its associated symbol serve as a warning to those potentially exposed, alerting them to take precautions. The biohazard symbol was developed in 1966 by Charles Baldwin, an environmental-health engineer at Dow Chemical Company, and is used to label biological materials carrying significant health risks, including viral samples and used hypodermic needles.
