Blood Feast is a 1963 American splatter film composed, shot, and directed by Herschell Gordon Lewis. The screenplay was written by Allison Louise Downe based on an idea by Lewis and David F. Freidman. The film stars Mal Arnold, William Kerwin, Connie Mason, and Lyn Bolton. The plot centers on Fuad Ramses, a psychopathic food caterer played by Arnold, who murders women to incorporate their body parts into his meals and perform sacrifices to an Egyptian goddess named Ishtar. Blood Feast is recognized as the first splatter film, a horror subgenre characterized by graphic depictions of on-screen gore. Despite receiving poor critical reviews that criticized the film as amateurish and vulgar, it achieved significant commercial success, grossing four million dollars against a production budget of only twenty-four thousand five hundred dollars. A sequel titled Blood Feast 2: All U Can Eat was released in 2002, many years after the original film.
