In the leather subculture and BDSM community, bootblacks are practitioners dedicated to the care and maintenance of boots, garments, and other gear. The practice gained significant visibility as a distinct subculture following the establishment of local, regional, and international bootblack contests during the 1990s and early 2000s. Today, bootblack stands and educational classes on bootblacking techniques are standard offerings at leather community events, contests, conferences, and parties. Beyond their role in preserving physical items that are often gifted, earned, or inherited, bootblacks serve as collectors of the stories and histories associated with their wearers. This practice has established bootblacks as central figures in documenting the oral history of the leather scene. While some may associate bootblacking with service-oriented submission, bootblacks themselves may adopt any role within a BDSM dynamic.
