Capstan

An American post-hardcore band, Capstan takes its name from a word with multiple meanings across different fields. In nautical contexts, a capstan is a rotating machine designed to control or apply force to another element. The term also appears in recording technology, where capstan refers to the rotating spindles used to move recording tape through the mechanism of a tape recorder. Additionally, capstan is associated with various other applications, including a British cigarette brand, a formula used to describe the relationship between hold-force and load-force for flexible lines around a cylinder, and a device similar to a windlass historically used in mining operations. The name has even been adopted for other purposes, such as an audio restoration software program and a station on Vancouver's SkyTrain rapid transit system. Despite these diverse uses of the term, the band Capstan established itself within the post-hardcore music genre in the United States.
