Carcosa

The name Carcosa originates from a fictional city created by American writer Ambrose Bierce in his 1886 short story "An Inhabitant of Carcosa." The ancient and mysterious city is depicted only vaguely in the narrative, appearing in hindsight through the perspective of a character who once inhabited it and reflects upon the city after its destruction. The fictional location gained wider literary prominence when American writer Robert W. Chambers adopted the name for multiple short stories included in his 1895 book The King in Yellow. This creative reuse of Carcosa by Chambers inspired subsequent generations of authors to incorporate the name into their own literary works, establishing it as a recurring element in fiction.
