A casket cassette refers to a historical term rooted in French colonial practice. The name derives from small chests known as casquettes, in which women carried their clothes. These women, called casquette girls in French or fille à la cassette, were brought from France to the French colonies of Louisiana for the purpose of marriage. They were also known historically as Pelican girls, reflecting their connection to the Louisiana colonial experience. The casquettes that gave the group its distinctive name were practical traveling containers essential for the long journey across the Atlantic.
