Formed in late 1971 in Ventura, California, Cirith Ungol is an American heavy metal band known for their distinctive blend of doom and power metal. The band takes its name from the mountain pass Cirith Ungol in J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, and their lyrical themes draw heavily from fantasy, particularly sword and sorcery narratives. During the 1970s, Cirith Ungol developed a heavy metal sound rooted in hard and psychedelic rock influences. Their debut studio album, Frost and Fire, released in 1981, introduced a heavier sound that is regarded as an early example of American power metal. The band's second studio album, King of the Dead, arrived in 1984 and solidified their power metal style while incorporating a darker, more ominous tone. Many music critics and fans consider King of the Dead to be among the first doom metal releases, establishing the band's significant influence on the genre's development.
