Cloud Rat

Cloud Rat refers to a tribe of arboreal and nocturnal herbivorous rodents endemic to the cloud forests of the Philippines. These rodents belong to the family Muridae and encompass five distinct genera: Batomys, known as hairy-tailed rats; Carpomys, the dwarf cloud rats; Crateromys, the bushy-tailed cloud rats; Musseromys, also called Luzon tree mice; and Phloeomys, the giant cloud rats. The tribe exhibits remarkable size variation, with individuals ranging from as large as 50 centimeters to as small as 74 millimeters. Cloud rats face significant conservation challenges due to habitat loss and illegal hunting, with several species classified as either endangered or critically endangered.
