Starting in 1984 from Cypress, California, HIRAX is an American thrash metal band led by vocalist Katon W. De Pena, the sole remaining original member in the current lineup. The band established itself as an early example of thrash metal, speed metal, and crossover thrash while performing alongside notable peers such as Metallica, Slayer, and Exodus in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Despite their heavy metal classification, HIRAX drew inspiration from cross-genre influences, most notably blues vocalist Sam Cooke, whom De Pena has cited as the greatest vocalist he has ever heard.
