The term "coven" refers to a group or gathering of witches. The word originates from Anglo-Norman roots, derived from covent and cuvent, which came from Old French covent. This ultimately traces back to the Latin word conventum, meaning convention. The word remained largely unused in English until 1921, when Margaret Murray promoted the idea that witches across Europe met in organized groups of thirteen, which they called covens.
