Cowboys from Hell is the fifth studio album and major label debut by American heavy metal band Pantera, released on July 24, 1990, by Atco Records. Recorded from late 1989 to April 1990, the album marked the band's first collaboration with producer Terry Date, a partnership that would continue throughout their career. The album represented a significant stylistic shift for Pantera, as the band fully abandoned the glam metal sound of their previous work in favor of a heavier approach. Cowboys from Hell has been recognized as one of the first ever groove metal albums, with its style heavily influenced by thrash metal, particularly the band Overkill and their album The Years of Decay. Upon release, the album sold slowly and did not chart until 1992, but it has since become certified double platinum in the United States. The album has received widespread critical acclaim and is today regarded as one of the greatest and most influential metal albums of the 1990s and of all time.
