ENOX is based on the ENOX2 gene, which encodes the Ecto-NOX disulfide-thiol exchanger 2 protein in humans. This protein is located on the long arm of the X chromosome and belongs to the NOX family of NADPH oxidases. As a growth-related cell surface protein, it was initially identified through its reaction with the monoclonal antibody K1 in specific cell types, including the ovarian carcinoma line OVCAR-3, which also express the CAKI surface glycoprotein. The encoded protein demonstrates two distinct enzymatic activities: the catalysis of hydroquinone or NADH oxidation, and protein disulfide interchange. These two activities alternate in a cyclical pattern with a period length of approximately 24 minutes. Additionally, the encoded protein exhibits prion-like properties. The ENOX2 gene produces two transcript variants that encode different isoforms of the protein.
