FrontSide draws its name from terminology used across multiple board sports including surfing, skateboarding, snowboarding, and aggressive inline skating. In these disciplines, frontside and backside describe how riders approach obstacles or perform tricks, indicating which side faces the wave, rail, pipe wall, or slope on approach. The terms originated in surfing, where frontside means the surfer faces the wave while surfing, with backside indicating the opposite direction. Forehand and backhand serve as synonymous terms used specifically in surfing.
