Formed in Plainfield, New Jersey in 1968, Funkadelic was an American funk rock band that remained active until 1982. As one of the two flagship groups of George Clinton's P-Funk collective, the band played a crucial role in pioneering funk music culture throughout the 1970s. Originally starting as a backing band for Clinton's vocal group the Parliaments, which later evolved into the full-fledged band Parliament, Funkadelic eventually developed their own distinct musical identity. They moved toward a heavier, psychedelic rock-oriented sound that set them apart in their independent recordings. The group released several critically acclaimed albums, including the landmark Maggot Brain in 1971 and One Nation Under a Groove in 1978, both of which helped cement their legacy in funk and rock music history.
