An Israelite shopeṭ, military leader, and prophet, Gideon was the son of Joash from the Abiezrite clan in the tribe of Manasseh. He lived in Ephra, also known as Ophrah. According to biblical accounts in Judges 6–8, Gideon achieved a decisive victory over the Midianites despite facing a vast numerical disadvantage, commanding a force of only 300 men. His calling and military accomplishments are documented in the Hebrew Bible.
