A glyph represents any kind of purposeful mark. In typography, a glyph is defined as the specific shape, design, or representation of a character. It serves as a particular graphical representation within a specific typeface or computer font, giving visual form to an element of written language. The underlying element that a glyph represents is called a grapheme, which is the conceptual abstraction of a letter, number, or symbol. A grapheme exists independent of any particular glyph designed to represent it in a specific font. This distinction means that while a grapheme remains constant as an abstract concept, the glyph can vary in appearance depending on the typeface or font in which it appears.
