About
GNOME is a free and open-source desktop environment for Linux and other Unix-like operating systems. It serves as the default desktop environment for many major Linux distributions, including Debian, Fedora Linux, Ubuntu, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and SUSE Linux Enterprise. GNOME is also the default desktop environment for Oracle Solaris, a Unix operating system. The software is developed by the GNOME Project, which comprises both volunteers and paid contributors, with Red Hat being the largest corporate contributor to the project. As an international initiative, GNOME focuses on developing frameworks for software development, creating end-user applications based on these frameworks, and coordinating efforts for the internationalization, localization, and accessibility of its software. The project has received significant financial support, including €1,000,000 from Germany's Sovereign Tech Fund in both 2023 and 2024.
