Founded in 1992 by guitarist Infernus, Gorgoroth is a Norwegian black metal band based in Bergen. Infernus remains the sole original member of the group, which has released nine studio albums throughout its career. The band's name derives from Gorgoroth, the dead plateau of darkness depicted in J. R. R. Tolkien's fantasy novel The Lord of the Rings. Gorgoroth identifies as a Satanic band and has gained attention for their live performances, which have included controversial elements such as impaled sheep heads and mock crucifixions. These theatrical aspects of their concerts have generated considerable controversy over the years.
