A graveyard is a place where the remains of many dead people are buried or otherwise entombed. The term is often used interchangeably with cemetery, though a graveyard primarily refers to a burial ground within a churchyard. The word cemetery derives from Greek, meaning "sleeping place," and originally applied to the Roman catacombs. It implies that land is specifically designated as a burial ground. The intact or cremated remains of people may be interred in various ways, including in a grave through burial, in a tomb resembling a sarcophagus, a mausoleum, a columbarium, a niche, or another edifice. In Western cultures, funeral ceremonies are often observed in cemeteries, with these ceremonies and rites of passage differing according to cultural practices and religious beliefs. Modern cemeteries frequently include crematoria, and some grounds previously used for both burial and cremation continue as crematoria as their principal use long after the interment areas have been filled.
