Heriot

About

Heriot derives from Old English heregeat, meaning "war-gear." Originally a death-duty in late Anglo-Saxon England, it required noblemen to provide their king with military equipment upon death, including horses, swords, shields, spears, and helmets. The practice later evolved into a feudal relief obligation owed by villeins. The French equivalent was known as droit du meilleur catel.
