James Newell Osterberg Jr., professionally known as Iggy Pop, is an American singer, songwriter, musician, and actor born on April 21, 1947. He is best known as the lead vocalist of the proto-punk band the Stooges and is regarded as the "Godfather of Punk." NPR named him one of the 50 Great Voices, and he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Stooges in 2010, receiving a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020 for his solo career. Pop is noted for his outrageous and unpredictable stage antics, poetic lyrics, and unique voice. The Stooges initially played a raw, primitive style of rock and roll and gained a reputation for confrontational performances. Pop was one of the first performers to stage-dive and popularized the activity, traditionally performing bare-chested. His collaborative relationship with David Bowie began with the 1973 album Raw Power and continued with the 1977 solo albums The Idiot and Lust for Life.
