Ellison is an artist whose early work gained significant attention in the music industry. The artist's first EP, titled "Indecisive and Halfhearted," was recorded and mixed by drummer Mitch Wyatt and self-released while maintaining studio quality standards. The EP, combined with Ellison's consistent regional live performances, caught the attention of J.T. Woodruff, the lead singer of Hawthorne Heights. Impressed by the work, Woodruff founded his own record label called Carbon Copy Media and signed Ellison as the first band to the label in early 2006.
