John Coffey is a fictional character from The Green Mile, a 1996 serial novel by American writer Stephen King. He is portrayed as an unusual death row inmate who encounters Paul Edgecombe, the supervisor of the prison's death row. Coffey is characterized by inexplicable healing and empathetic abilities that distinguish him throughout the narrative. The Green Mile was initially released in six volumes before being republished as a single-volume work. The novel exemplifies the magical realism genre and served as the basis for a subsequent film adaptation that achieved both critical and commercial success. The work received significant literary recognition, winning the Bram Stoker Award for Best Novel in 1996. The following year, it earned nominations for Best Novel at both the British Fantasy Award and the Locus Award.
