Born March 5, 1945, in Camden, Mississippi, John Primer is an American blues guitarist and singer who became a central figure in Chicago's electric blues scene. He first gained experience playing behind Junior Wells in the house band at Theresa's Lounge, a legendary blues venue. Primer subsequently performed as a member of several influential bands, including those led by Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, and Magic Slim, where he honed his craft alongside some of the genre's greatest artists. After establishing himself as a respected sideman, Primer launched an award-winning career as a front man, becoming known for carrying forward the traditional Chicago blues sound, often called the Windy City sound, into the 21st century. His dedication to preserving and advancing this classic blues tradition has solidified his place in the continuum of American blues music.
