A judge is a person who presides over court proceedings, either alone or as part of a judicial panel. In adversarial systems, the judge hears witnesses and evidence presented by barristers or solicitors, assesses the credibility and arguments of the parties involved, and issues a ruling based on their interpretation of the law and personal judgment. Judges are expected to conduct trials impartially and typically in open court. The powers, functions, methods of appointment, discipline, and training of judges vary widely across different jurisdictions. In some jurisdictions, a judge's powers may be shared with a jury. In inquisitorial systems of criminal investigation, a judge might also serve as an examining magistrate. The presiding judge ensures that all court proceedings are lawful and orderly.
