The Jutes were one of the Germanic tribes who settled in Great Britain following the departure of the Romans. According to the historical account of Bede, they ranked among the three most powerful Germanic nations, alongside the Angles and the Saxons. The descendants of the Jutes came to inhabit the people of Kent, the Isle of Wight, and certain areas in the province of the West Saxons, where they were known by their ancestral name. The precise origins of the Jutes remain a matter of historical debate, with no consensus among scholars. One prominent theory suggests they initially came from the Jutland Peninsula but were forced to migrate to the Frisian coast following a Danish invasion of their homeland. From this coastal settlement, they eventually made their way to southern Britain during the later fifth century, establishing themselves as part of the broader wave of Germanic migration that occurred during the Migration Period.
