A Pokémon species created by Nintendo and Game Freak, Jynx first appeared in the video games Pokémon Red and Blue and their sequels. The character has since been featured in various merchandise, spinoff titles, and animated and printed adaptations of the franchise. In Japan, Jynx is known as Rougela and has been voiced by Mayumi Tanaka, Chie Satō, and Chiyako Shibahara. The character's humanoid appearance has generated discussion among media outlets and cultural critics. Notably, cultural critic Carole Boston Weatherford raised concerns about Jynx's design, describing it as representing blackface in the character's anime depiction. In response to such complaints, Game Freak modified the character's appearance by changing the original black coloring of its face to purple.
