Kerosene Heights is part of the emo revival movement, also known as fourth wave emo, which emerged in the late 2000s and peaked during the mid-2010s. This underground movement developed as a reaction against the mainstream sensibilities of third-wave emo, drawing inspiration instead from 1990s Midwest emo traditions. The genre became increasingly prominent in underground music circles by the mid-2010s, gaining recognition through influential releases from era-defining groups and expanding significantly in sonic diversity. The fourth-wave movement began to decline toward the end of the decade as key bands disbanded or took hiatuses, eventually giving way to a fifth wave of artists who pushed emo into more experimental directions, often incorporating post-rock elements into their sound.
