Born on July 19, 1860, Lizzie Andrew Borden was an American woman who became the subject of one of the most notorious legal cases in United States history. On August 4, 1892, her father and stepmother were killed by axe in their home in Fall River, Massachusetts. Borden was tried for these murders but was acquitted, and no one else was ever charged in connection with the crimes. Despite facing ostracism from other residents of Fall River following the trial, Borden remained in the town for the rest of her life. The Borden murders and the subsequent trial generated significant publicity across the nation and have maintained a lasting presence in American popular culture through various films, theatrical productions, literary works, and folk rhymes, particularly in the Fall River area. Borden died on June 1, 1927, at the age of 66, just nine days before the death of her older sister Emma.
