Charles "Lucky" Luciano was an Italian gangster who operated primarily in the United States during the 20th century. He began his criminal career with the Five Points Gang and played a key role in developing the National Crime Syndicate. Luciano is widely regarded as the father of the Italian-American Mafia for establishing the Commission in 1931. In 1936, he was convicted of compulsory prostitution but later had his sentence commuted in 1946 in exchange for alleged wartime naval intelligence cooperation. He was deported to Italy, where he died in 1962.
