Lynyrd Skynyrd is an American rock band formed in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1964. The group became a defining force of the Southern rock genre in the 1970s with hit songs like "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird." Their career was tragically interrupted on October 20, 1977, when their chartered airplane crashed, killing lead vocalist Ronnie Van Zant and two other members. The band reunited in 1987 with Ronnie's brother Johnny Van Zant as lead vocalist and continued performing and recording for decades. In 2006, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
