Mammoth

Mammoth represents an extinct elephantid genus that thrived from the late Miocene epoch approximately 6.2 million years ago until around 4,000 years ago. These animals inhabited Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America at various times. Distinguished by their large spirally twisted tusks and, in later species, thick fur and cold-weather adaptations, mammoths were more closely related to Asian elephants than African elephants. The woolly mammoth evolved in Siberia between 700,000 and 400,000 years ago, with some populations surviving on Russia's Wrangel Island until approximately 4,000 years ago.
