Mastiff is a name derived from a large and powerful type of dog known for its impressive size and distinctive physical characteristics. These dogs are among the largest breeds, typically featuring a short coat, a long low-set tail, and large feet. They have a large and bulky skull, a broad and short muzzle, and drooping pendant-shaped ears. Historical records from Europe and Asia spanning back approximately 3,000 years document the existence of dogs of the mastiff type. Throughout history, mastiffs have served many purposes in human society. They have historically functioned as guard dogs, protecting homes and property. Beyond their protective roles, mastiffs have been utilized as hunting dogs, war dogs, and participants in various blood sports, including dog fighting, bull-baiting, bear-baiting, and even lion-baiting.
