Midwinter is a term with deep historical roots in early Germanic calendars, where it referred to either a specific period or day potentially determined by a lunisolar system before adaptation to the Gregorian calendar. The word appears across multiple historical sources with varying meanings. In Old English, midwinter could refer to Christmas Day on 25 December or the broader Christmas season, and indirectly pointed to the winter solstice, which was also considered to fall on 25 December. In Old Norse, miðvetr represented either the first day or the entire span of the Scandinavian month Þorri, which fell between mid-January and mid-February. Beginning in the 18th century, the term became subject to misunderstanding and has sometimes been conflated with the astronomical winter solstice occurring on 21 or 22 December. In contemporary English, the word can reference this astronomical event, reflecting the evolution of its meaning over centuries.
