In ancient Greek religion and mythology, the Muses were inspirational goddesses of literature, science, and the arts, serving as the source of knowledge embodied in poetry, lyric songs, and myths transmitted orally throughout Greek culture. The number and names of the Muses varied by region, but during the Classical period this was standardized to nine: Calliope, Clio, Polyhymnia, Euterpe, Terpsichore, Erato, Melpomene, Thalia, and Urania. In modern usage, the term muse refers to any person who serves as a source of artistic inspiration.
