Naraka

Naraka is a concept rooted in ancient Sanskrit meaning the realm of hell across multiple Indian religions. According to schools of Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddhism, Naraka represents a place of torment. The term has extended beyond its Sanskrit origins, with modifications appearing in Indonesian and Malaysian languages to describe the Islamic concept of Hell. In Cambodia, Naraka served as a Khmer word for hell as well. The inhabitants of this underworld are commonly referred to as hellish beings, also known as Narakas. These entities are further designated in Sanskrit by several related terms: Narakiyas, Narakarnavas, and Narakavasis, each describing the tormented beings that inhabit this realm. The Khmer Empire's cultural and religious landscape was shaped by a blending of Buddhist and Hindu traditions, both of which incorporated the concept of Naraka as a realm of suffering and torment, often depicted as hell through their integrated spiritual worldviews.
