About
The name NoSelf draws from the Buddhist philosophical concept of anattā, a Pali term representing the doctrine of non-self. According to this teaching, no unchanging, permanent self exists, and there is an absence of essence in any phenomenon. While many interpret anattā as a doctrine that denies the existence of a self entirely, it is more accurately understood as a strategy to attain non-attachment. This strategy works by recognizing that everything is impermanent in nature. The doctrine remains silent on the question of whether an unchanging essence ultimately exists. This philosophical perspective contrasts with dominant schools of Hinduism, which assert the existence of Ātman as pure awareness or witness-consciousness, essentially treating consciousness as an eternal self. The artistic choice to adopt this name reflects an engagement with deep philosophical traditions about the nature of identity and existence.
