Inspector Rex is an Austrian-Italian police procedural television series created by Peter Hajek and Peter Moser. The show originally aired as an Austrian production from 1994 to 2004 on ORF 1 before being revived in 2008 as an Austro-Italian co-production on Rai 1. From 2009 onwards, the series transitioned to full Italian production, with episodes primarily set in Rome and occasional storylines in Austria. Rai 1 cancelled the production in June 2015 after eight Italian seasons. The series centers on a German Shepherd police dog named Rex and his partners working within the Vienna Kriminalpolizei homicide unit to solve crimes. A spin-off series called Stockinger debuted in 1996, focusing on Ernst Stockinger, an original member of the homicide division. The show has inspired numerous international remakes across Poland, Latvia, Russia, Portugal, Lithuania, Slovakia, and Canada. In October 2024, it was announced that Inspector Rex will return to television in 2026.
