Of Mice and Men is a 1937 novella by American author John Steinbeck following two displaced migrant ranch workers, George Milton and Lennie Small, as they search for jobs in California during the Great Depression. Steinbeck drew from his teenage experiences working alongside migrant farm workers in the 1910s. The title references Robert Burns' poem "To a Mouse," which contains the line "The best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry." The book has faced frequent censorship and bans for vulgarity and offensive language, appearing on the American Library Association's list of Most Challenged Books.
