Samuel Osiah Thier was an American doctor and academic born on June 23, 1937. He earned his medical degree from the State University of New York Upstate Medical University in 1960 and went on to become a professor of Medicine and Health Care Policy at Harvard University. Throughout his career, Thier held several prominent leadership positions, including serving as president of Brandeis University from 1991 to 1994 and president of the Massachusetts General Hospital from 1994 to 1996. He was recognized as an authority on internal medicine and kidney disease, and gained widespread recognition for his expertise in national health policy, medical education, and biomedical research. Thier passed away on January 3, 2026.
