The name draws from historical Indo-European religious concepts reconstructed through comparative mythology. An otherworld, also called an otherside, derives from the Latin term orbis alius, meaning "other world" or "other side," a phrase used by the Roman poet Lucan when describing the Celtic Otherworld. Similar religious, mythological, and metaphysical concepts appear across cultures worldwide, including realms inhabited by supernatural beings and realms of the dead. In these traditions, spirits are believed to travel between different worlds or layers of existence, typically moving along a central axis such as a giant tree, a tent pole, a river, a rope, or mountains. These ancient cross-cultural beliefs about interconnected realms and spiritual passage form the conceptual foundation for the artist's name.
